In our modern society, almost every woman has heard of a traditional baby shower, in which we shower the baby with the necessities for the first year of life. This is always appreciated but we often forget about the mother through this showering. A mother’s blessing can be an additional or alternative way to celebrate a woman’s rite of passage into motherhood.

The Mother’s Blessing is inspired heavily by the sacred Navajo ceremony which is called a Blessingway. The mother invites her most cherished friends + family to come together with the intention to honour, uplift, celebrate, speak life and love into the mother. This builds her “village” which often feels like is missing.

Through this ceremony, the mother moves through sacred rituals and experiences that will allow her to express how she is feeling about entering the birth portal. She receives guidance and wisdom from her sisters + mothers that she will carry with through the transition of maiden to mother. This will not only include physically pampering the mother, but spiritually, mentally and emotionally preparing her for this profound life transition.

Heaven works closely with the mother to create a ceremony that feels invigorating, nourishing and wholly like an experience that will be forever carved into her bones. Through the carefully curated rituals and experiences within this ceremony; a circle of strength will be created for the mother to carry with her into birth and even bring with her into postpartum + beyond.

Curated Rituals…

The Red Thread Ritual

The red thread ritual in a Mother's Blessing ceremony is a symbolic act of connection and support for the expectant mother. It involves passing a ball of red thread around a circle of women, with each woman wrapping a piece around her wrist before the ceremony and keeping it on until the baby is born. The red thread represents the lineage of ancestors and a visual connection of support, both for the mother-to-be and for the women in the circle.

Salt Bowl Ritual

A bowl of magnesium salts or epsom salts are passed around the circle with a jar of dried herbs and flowers. Each guest adds some flowers to the bowl and massages them through whilst sharing some love, an affirmation, a wish or a mantra with the mama-to-be.

Candle Ritual

The mother has a candle that lights the centre of the alter. The group then custom makes their own candle to light with the mother candle and take home with them. When the mother goes into labour, the women all light their candles to light the way through the birth portal for the mother.

Bracelet/Necklace Weaving

The women in attendance all choose a few beads to add to a necklace for mom. As they put their beads onto the necklace, they wish intentions, blessings and love into it. The mother then wears this or has it within her birth space as a reminder of the power of women around her.

Birth Essential Oil Roll On

Creating a wonderful scent that can be used during labour, in your postpartum and beyond. All of the women come together to each create their own roll on, weaving aromatherapy (that is safe for pregnancy) while creating a tool that mama can carry with her tangibly after the ceremony.

Affirmation Cards

Each woman designs an affirmation card (or 2/3) with watercolour paint + paper. The mother can then pin these cards all over her birthing space and look to them as reminders when she really needs it. Women also enjoy writing letters for the mother to open when she needs it most (first weeks of postpartum) with the watercolours/pens provided.

Sound Bowl + Reiki Meditation

For the more spiritual mother… Everyone will be guided through a sound bowl and reiki meditation. With this, Heaven will facilitate a healing for the women in the room.

 FAQs

  • The cost of your blessing is $299 CAD. This does not include any sort of meal preparation.

  • Truly, it can happen at any point throughout pregnancy, however for the most impact, I recommend in the last trimester, specifically between 34-38 weeks. This is the time in which the mother begins to really go inward and prepare for entering the birth portal.

  • Whether you have had no babies, 1 beautiful baby or 7 - the limit does not exist! I believe that each pregnancy brings its own unique energy and the mother can ALWAYS receive loving support and guidance whether she has been through the birth portal before or not.

  • I currently service Canmore + Banff, Alberta. A blessing is typically done in the mothers home, backyard or a friend or family members home. It can also be done in a park, an area that the mother cherishes or I can offer my own backyard if a mother needs (weather dependant for any outdoor locations).

If you do prefer outdoors, I always recommend an indoor PLAN B.

  • 3 rituals are included in each ceremony. The mother can custom choose which rituals these are - if a mother is wanting more, this can be discussed for an additional fee.

  • To ensure that your ceremony receives the attention it truly deserves, please email me to discuss your estimated due date + schedule in the meet + greet where we will go over the customization of your ceremony!

What makes our ceremonies worth it?

  • Having something curated entirely to YOU as the mother is so sacred. Each ceremony is created to honour your unique story, journey and birth intentions.

  • A mother is reminded by the women who mean the most to her just how capable she truly is. A mother carries the collective strength of the circle with her - reminding her always that she can DO this. A ceremony brings so much momentum to the birthing portal.

  • Mothers often feel like they need to carry it all on their own shoulders. These ceremonies are those gentle reminders that we were never meant to carry it all. Through these blessings, it gives mom a tangible look at her village and what can happen when she calls upon that, whether it be through this celebration or into her postpartum.

  • So often we get lost in all of baby prep that the mother forgets to prep for herself. By creating and receiving these physical keepsakes of your support (whether it be beads, affirmations or candles), it will allow you to lean on that through the birth portal.
